Small Talk Rant Lyrics by Aaron Malka

2018

[Intro]
Wow, you’ve grow so much!
So whaddya wanna do for a living?
Isn’t the weather absolutely awful right now?

[Verse 1]
Picture yourself at a family gathering or function.
Do these comments sound familiar?
Having countless strangers and older family members constantly asking the same questions over and over again?
Listen, don’t get me wrong, I love my family,
But sometimes the small talk can just be a little too much.
I mean the literal definition of small talk is: polite conversation about unimportant or uncontroversial matters.
If talking about the weather with 20 different people for a few hours somehow genuinely interests you, then good for you.
But for me, I can’t stand it.

[Verse 2]
Smalltalk just feels like the most superficial way to have a conversation.
I mean the whole reason that every conversation (pause) with a stranger isn’t interesting is because people don’t want to run the risk of offending someone, boring them, or, worst case scenario, making the other person dislike them.
Now, I’m sorry, but that’s absolute crap.
I will be perfectly honest in saying that I am an introverted person.
But it has less to do with that than it does with people just being plain fake.

[Verse 3]
I have to say that I am a hypocrite of this also, since I am more often than not acting surface level when I am in awkward social situations.
But that doesn’t change the fact that smalltalk forces people to be fake in the first place.
To me, that’s just not right.
Now I’m not saying that every conversation has to question the very meaning of existence itself, or something.
All I’m saying is people shouldn’t have to put on an act in order to be accepted.

[Verse 4]
So why is it so tedious?
Because people are too afraid to say what they’re really thinking and are forced to censor themselves.
If you think about all the best conversations you’ve had, I guarantee that they had more content in them than just the weather.
Maybe I’m saying all this ‘cause I’m just plain bad at it, but I can’t be only me that thinks smalltalk feels like the most laborious thing in the world.

[Outro]
Now, after hearing me say all this, you’d think my goal is to tell you to engage in more “big talk” or something, then you’re just plain wrong.
All I want people to do is to be more open in their conversations so it doesn’t feel like I’m always talking to a brick wall.
Anyways, that’s all from me. Thanks for watching, and see ya.
