She wore this beautiful dress at the beginning of the party. She looked educated, sharp and amazingly pretty.
She's not much of a drinker, here she was enjoying a glass of milk.
Sadly, she got bumped, and white spilled on her.
I lost sight of her but she resurfaced later.
She borrowed a dress from one of her friends, an adornment that’s
shorter and tighter, not usually her style, but I didn’t mind. It was a nice fit for her, and I ogled at what was mine.
Out of the corner of my eye, I couldn’t help but notice the other men in the room
doing the same, not being very sly.
She resumed drinking, this time a harder drink. I frowned and I looked at her quizzically, not knowing what to think. Then guess what? The dress ripped apart as she moved more and
more, under the influence. I covered her and picked her, and I wondered why all of a sudden, she was so dense.
She’s fine, I said to myself. I asked her friend if she had another dress with an awkward smile,
her friend nodded and complied.
There hangs another dress,
but mind you, it’s not to impress,
her friend replied.
Indeed the dress looked tawdry and on her,
would have looked hideous.
Let me wear it, she says, and when she does wear it, didn’t she look gorgeous.
How did I not know all these outfits would fit my wife?
Someone hands her weed, something she had a blunt knowledge of before.
My mouth hangs agape as I’m shocked and confused, not knowing who she is anymore.
When her mouth and the cigar meet at a joint, someone plugs in new speakers and everything becomes loud. My wife sways, her eyes closed, in love with another crowd.
The dress she donned at her arrival lies on a chair; it’s now a tarnished memory of who she was. I think in all three dresses, that one was the most beautiful I’d seen her in. The saddest
part is, I would never think so again, if she were to wear it now, it just wouldn’t be her.
