Block Party Lyrics by Angela Willcocks

0

Block Party

bright blue sky folds the under greyish pink pollution,
squares of dry brown-green lawns,
are shaped by canvas shadows, skewered with deck chairs.

Fashionably late, after a morning yoga class
with a plate full fresh fruit salad,
in hand. I’m greeted by a big
bald, black, gay old smile, he
sort of hugs, inviting me to meet the others.

His partner, has long refined rows of dreads
that I think have been vacuumed from my host head,
and the personality of a cardboard cutout.
We star the tour. Pink hibiscus pattern momos and hair.

1/2 legs of glazed chicken lie waiting in foil tins,
Languid old men with sagging faces, stare.
Offering no recognition.
Bouncy castles cram forgotten spaces..

Chairs plopped along the curb unevenly fill the blank spaces
While cheerleaders in black, push and caress for tacos,
Lime green sauce decorates chins and clothes of the disabled, while
a light breeze pushes us forward.

On a cracked cement driveway a folding table holds pots of beans,
Empty cans stand beside, vacant.
With a leather eye patch, his 3rd eye scans us,
while his belly stretches the owner offers burgers in round white bread buns a 3rd generation resident.

Rounding the corner a black mother of 5 entertains
an Asian Evangelical, eating
processed hotdogs glistening with a wavy line of yellow mustard.
They met at a covenant church?
Meanwhile the latino neighbor offers packages of crunchy cheese dorritos.

We pass sweating dark skins, hairy chests.
and damn big boobs
We pass a pock marked creviced white face.
Smiling lecherously once confiding "I like men"
We don’t pass
the newbies.

Caps cover balding heads, wife beaters expose a dead
Marine tattoo. Beautiful muscles accentuated by exquisite black line work
coalesce with century school book letters
We chat
politely. They pass joints sucking and holding long breaths.

Next door a young mother stands, her mother speaks
no english, while her son plays in a blow up
rubber castle. Orange street cones define
a soccer field, a full band spills over a lawn preparing to play

Meanwhile, 2 content black men sit on the edge of
a spare ribs truck, one fat, the other slim, black suit, gold chains.
We turn the corner
families are squeezed onto the foot path coolers, kids, trash
and uneaten food.

I keep on walking. Passing through.
Slipping in to shop I get my nails done light blue
by a vietnamese migrant worker.
