Mack Vickery and me, we wrote "That's when I knew" together
We were going through the cocaine phase of our life and, we'd been on the road for about a month, all through the south and we'd come back into Nashville and as we're comin' into town, I told Mack to let me out at, it was an old crack whore motel over by where they built the football stadium, that honky tonk at the bottom of it
I said I'm gon' check in there Mack and kill myself, cause I can't take another ass whopping, another day on this cocaine
And so um, Mack said "Hеll, I'ma check in with you man" and he said we'll do it togеther
And we checked in the room and we got down on our knees and prayed, we prayed and we asked God to forgive us, and to help us and um, when we got up, we wrote the song
It came real quick and I'm learning the song and Mack's on the phone, he gets off the phone, he said "I just found that I've got a songwriting check for several thousand bucks"
He said um, "Let's go get it and see where we can get it cashed"
And he said "What are we gon' do then?"
I said "Hell, Mack, let's go to California"
Mack said " That's a great idea"
So we got it cashed and we bought us a couple eight balls and headed out in the middle of the night for California
