My baby boy opens his eyes
and comes to know me
again.
We smile together
in joyful recognition.
Hushed, not to wake Mama
I unwrap him from his swaddle.
As each arm is freed
he raises it up, stretching.
I slide my hands underneath
his little body
and forklift him up into my embrace.
Downstairs
we swing wide the broad wooden door.
The meadow, shrouded in mist
the mountains, hidden by clouds.
I talk to my boy about what we see
promise him the mountains.
Later, the sun will burn off the vapor
and the peaks will emerge
triumphant
the highest one dusted with snow.
We crouch down low
to see what’s going on
in the dew-dropped grass.
Plenty.
Small wildflowers are opening to the morning
just like me and my son.
Tiny white ones
with enticing yellow circles at their mouths
purple honeysuckles
yellow buttercups and dandelions
each their own unit of life.
Gangly crane flies bumble around in the grass
I am grateful, in this moment
for the gift of wonderment
and the ways that my fresh-faced boy
reminds me of our innate privilege
and brings me to exercise it daily.
His eyes are open wide—
attentive
curious
amused.
A wasp seems to be asleep
on a type of circular leaf that I recognize
from the flower planter on the balcony
above our heads.
An upstart settlement
from seeds blown down on a breeze.
I speak to my son
of the birds and the bees.
Cause and effect.
Ongoingness.
I follow his intent gaze
to a slug
sliming its way across a dandelion green.
“That’s a slug,” I say
Giving him language.
One day, the word “slug”
will slide across his tongue.
We rise up.
I hold my boy with one arm
facing out
his back against my chest.
With my other hand I palm his belly.
A crow calls
somewhere in the valley
the lazy music of cowbells
wafts through the mist
from an unseen hillside.
Three vultures circle over the ravine.
I tell my son
who has only just started to live
that something must have died
and the vultures are closing in
for a feast.
And that life comes
and goes, in cycles
that death for one
can mean life for another
but that does not make time our enemy
rather, our greatest gift.
Now.
My eyes catch on a movement
at the edge of the meadow—
a pair of small deer
poised, staring
embodiments of alertness.
My boy hasn’t noticed them yet
until they begin to run
so fast
all spring-loaded muscle and tendon
nothing unnecessary
so bouyant
like gravity treats them special
because they've earned it.
Together, we watch
rapt
following their flight
across the meadow.
My child grips my index finger
with his whole hand
squeezing tighter now.
