So I hopped in his wagon and home we did go
The job for me was buildin’ fence
The work it was easy and the grub it was fine
Much better than that on the T&P Line
Mr. Wright had a daughter at the age of sixteen
I saw her the fairest I ever had seen
Her eyes was blue and her features was finе
The girl for the bum on the T&P Linе
Now, at last, we got each other to chat
I’d help her pick up and do this and that
I’d work in the garden and be there on time
And fish in the lake by the T&P Line
At last, I was summoned to the office one day
“What’s that young man” I heard a voice say
“You’re nothing but a bum all dressed up for the blind
And beating your way on the T&P Line
Now I do not know if that’s a fair view
I do all the work you inform me to do
But if you don’t like it just hand me my dime
And I’ll be bumming on the T&P Line
I went by the house to bid Esther farewell
The grief and sorrow no tongues could tell
The tears in her eyes and also in mine
“You are no bum from the T&P Line
So across the sod right down to the highway
All I could think of was Esther that day
I’ll love her ‘til dead and I’ll see her some time
I’ll bum my way to her on the T&P Line
