He Drives Lyrics by Bradley Hathaway

How Long

0

There are rooms inside of his heart; each filled with different women.
The doors are shut; the windows are sealed.
But each of their presence he still feels.
He touches himself sometimes, pictures her in his mind.
Not her body, or the things they would do.
Just the soft and tender moments when she would say, "I love you."
He gets in his car and he drives . . . he drives and he drives and he drives and he drives.
He ends up on Main Street; looking for company, looking for clarity.
He asks, "What is love?" to the characters he would meet.
Cleaver in his hand, butcher tells him, "Love is sacrifice."
The florist says, "It's purty. It's gentle and it's nice."
The bookseller tells him, "Well, it's a long, long story."
And the wounded vet tells him, "It's death and it's glory."
The drug dealer tells him, "Well, it's something akin to a drug."
The construction worker says, "It's a lot of work; you're gonna need a hard hat and gloves."
The prophet on the corner yells at him, "Why it's Jesus Christ!"
The parking lot attendant says, "I don't know man, but you owe me a buck and 25."
He gets in his car and he drives . . . . he drives and he drives and he drives and he drives.
And he is no philosopher, but he starts to asks himself, "How do you measure love?
In gold or silver? Losses and gains? Summer or winter?
And where is love? Where can it even be found?
Is it flying through the sky; or is it crawling on the ground?
Is it in your head or your heart?
In your fingers or in your toes?
Can you see it with your eyes?
Can you smell it with your nose?
Can it be found at all; or is it off hidden deep in the sea?
Is it captive and bound; or is it wild and free?
Is it a man or a woman?
One, two, few, or many?
Does it ever get enough; or is it always wanting?
Can the fearful know it; or only the brave?
Is it prone to wander; or will it forever stay?"

Years gone by now; there's grey on his head, wrinkles all around her eyes.
He's lying on bed, coughing up blood.
He's about to die.
He's far from perfect, but he loves her so
She's no diamond, but she has a heart of gold.
He pulls her close, kisses her face, says, "I love you, forgive me all my sins."
She kisses him back, says, "I do. I love you. I'll see you again."
