(The cow is heard mooing throughout the rest of the scene.)
[?] so when Papa comes, I'm not in his way.
(The car returns.)
[?] for like, dragging it back to the [?].
Oh, I see.
Yeah, you did forget the knife!
Not this time.
Well, I mean last time.
Well, I did, I went and got it.
Need me to hold the knife for you?
Sure.
I'm gonna have to get in there. I guess I'll go over the fence.
This pen's uh, it's really [?].
Yeah, we dumped some hay on it.
Oh, okay.
Why?
Just so wе could roll out our truck easy.
Uh huh.
[?] the tension clip.
Oops, lost 'еm right down here.
Right in there.
You know-
I see it.
You know, Oscar, you're the best.
Yeah.
Good job.
Otherwise we were gonna have to get your old magnet thing to find it. That would've done it.
Yeah, but luckily, we jumped over it.
We know where it's hanging out.
So we know- What? How did your pants get ripped?
From usin' em. Apparently you're not supposed to bend over in these pants, you're supposed to just stand around.
No, that's right. Stand around lookin' good.
(Laughing)
Alright, get your cold little hands outta the back of my pants.
Alright, so it's a moment to be calm and quiet, okay? And then you can get-
Why?
Like we did with Diego, right?
So we're gonna slaughter this cow, and I want to recognize it. And it holds a special place as Wendell was born days before we took it, and her daughter here, in exchange to the midwife, which was a job I was not exactly interested in taking on in the days after Wendell was born, but I also felt that our midwife Nancy was an example- of somebody who was willing to do whatever it took whenever things happened to present themselves, that uh, we would also be able to slaughter her cow for her, even days after Wendell was born. So, that's how this cow got here and has not turned out to be a milk cow for us, but uh, it will feed a lot of people. And there's a woman coming today who's gonna take the organs and lots of parts, and seems to be particularly excited for the opportunity to make some of the food that she traditionally enjoys. So, I wanna thank the cow for the energy and the food and the nourishment and the community that its body will feed.
(A crow caws in the distance.)
Alright, so now I'm gonna be shooting off here.
So we, Grandpa and I will step back. Stand over here, Grandpa.
So Devyn, you can hand him tonight, then?
I can grab it, it's okay.
[?]
(Devyn fires a gun.)
[?] why did you wanna, why were you gonna kill that cow?
For food?
[?]
And for our customers.
For friends, there's gonna be a party. You've met Lealon, right?
No.
I think you'll know her. I've actually never met her, but she's having a big birthday party and her friends are gonna come and cook a lot of the parts that people often don't eat.
Why?
Like the stomach and stuff.
Blegh!
Yeah.
Why do you need [?]
We didn't need it, but we're gonna give it to the cows when we go to get the cow out. Yeah, sure.
Buh-lee-doo-doo, buh-lee-doo-doo, buh-lee-dee-dee-dee!
Why is it not doing that, Papa?
See how- Look at its eyes.
Yeah.
Its brain is dead, it doesn't feel anything. See how his eyes don't see anything?
Yeah.
But its body's still alive. See? It doesn't see anything. It's gone. But its body's not dead.
So I could touch it as much as I want-
Well, but the thing is its body's gonna lurch around and kick. Cuz as the energy drains out of its body, it can still kick once, so then you still have to watch out.
But like, I can put sticks on it, and it won't go after me.
Sure, and it doesn't feel it so you're not- not hurting it. But see that? Be very careful around a dying cow like that. Watch its legs. It can suddenly just kick you.
They're not hard.
No, very hard! Way harder than anybody can kick you.
Just look at it.
I wanna help.
Like, threw a stick at it- at its body.
It wouldn't do anything.
Like a hard-
(The cow groans.)
Like a big stick. Or like a really big stick, like this big.
It wouldn't do anything.
As big as you guys!
You couldn't do that.
But what if you guys did?
Would we drop the stick on it? Like a log?
Yeah.
Why would we do that?
So it wouldn't kick.
Oh, you mean like we could weigh its legs down with a tree trunk?
Yeah.
I guess, we could also just stand over here and let it finish kicking.
