Unlettered Lyrics by Chase Schweitzer

Raise Your Hands or They Become Monsters

0

(That was very earnest, I thought people would laugh at that but they took it really serious.)

Maybe life would be better unlettered
Better untethered from paper and leather
I'd rather remember without writing letters
Memories, reveries light as a feather

Nothing in ink, nothing in stone
And each thought I think is a thought of my own
I can forget anything that I want
Because all that I’ve got is my skin and my bones

And I can forget, I can forgive
Every regret is a reason to live
Life is illiterate
My skin is not paper, my bones are not pens

Alone and within, my mind is open
Let go of language, it doesn't exist
If I could live in a life without poetry
Would life really be so different?

Well I'd talk to my dad
Say "Hey, it’s your son."
I'm really not mad but there
Is only one. Thing I should tell you
Now that I'm bigger
I put a pen to my head
I pulled the trigger
I figured if my blood was thicker
Than the ink that I spilled on the page
Then I wouldn't mine
Draining my veins
Onto the floor with the rest of my brains
And this is my name
I am the Author
But I hate everything that I write
Poems and rhymes are the source of my plight
Please understand cause I know I am right
I waste my life
Trying to prove that I'm a human
Everything I do is useless
But I still exhume words and light fuses

You wrote all of that
In your notebook in math class
It was 2014
Three years later you still feel like
You're being laughed at
Your anxiety's rising
It's killing you
You think you’re slipping away
The friends that you made
The people you knew
Your family
All of them fading to gray

Why do you still wish
That you were illiterate?
When you were a little kid
Your life was a story
And you were committed to finishing it
Now you just wish you could quit

What happened to Lynne?
What happened to happy? (What happened?)
What happened to losing yourself in a book
What happened to crying and laughing?

Why should you write when no one will read it?
Why should you sing when no one will hear it?
Why should you breathe when no one will steal it?
Maybe life would be better unlettered
