A Week In A Country Jail Lyrics by Dave Dudley

The Pool Shark

0

[Verse]
\nOne time, I spent a week inside a little country jail
\nI don't guess I'll ever live it down
\nI was sitting at a red light when these two men come and got me
\nAnd said that I was speeding through their town
\nThey said, "Tomorrow morning, you can see the judge, then go"
\nThey let me call one person on the phone
\nI thought I'd be there overnight, so I just called the boss
\nTo tell him I'd be off, but not for long
\nThey motioned me inside a cell with sevеn other guys
\nOne little barrеd-up window in the rear
\nMy cellmate said, "If they had let me bring some money in
\nWe ought to send the jailer for some beer"
\nWe had to pay him double 'cause he was the man in charge
\nAnd the jailer's job was not the best in town
\nLater on, his wife brought hot bologna, eggs and gravy
\nThe first day I was there, I turned it down
\nNext morning, they just let us sleep, but I was up real early
\nWondering when I'd get my release
\nLater on, we got more hot bologna, eggs and gravy
\nBy now, I wasn't quite so hard to please
\nTwo days later, when I thought that I had been forgotten
\nThe sheriff came in, chewing on a straw
\nHe said, "Where is this guy who thinks that this is Indianapolis?
\nI'd like to talk to him about the law"
\nWell, I told him who I was and told him I was working steady
\nAnd I really should be getting on my way
\nThat part about me being who I was did not impress him
\nHe said, "The judge will be here any day"
\nThe jailer had this wife, and let me tell you, she was awful
\nShe brought that hot bologna every day
\nAfter seven days, she got to looking so much better
\nI asked her if she'd like to run away
\nNext morning, that old judge took every nickel that I had
\nHe said, "Son, let that teach you not to race"
\nThe jailer's wife was smiling from the window as I left
\nIn thirty minutes, I was out of state\n\n
