Poor Floyd Collins was a caving fool

To view those glories of the deep that few had ever seen
Thanks to Floyd crawling down where few had ever been
In the backwoods of Kentucky, Floyd's was quite the tale to tell
Though many warned that Floyd would crawl right through the gates of hell
Each day he took more chances, and each time the legend grew
Some called Floyd a hero, others said he was immature
Floyd found a sandy cave one day after he had had a dream
That his destiny came calling from that tunnel's opening
His brother fed him rope and whip, as down that shaft he crawled
He'd meet a fate that soon would have the nation so enthralled
For that cave began to crumble, and Floyd was trapped in the debris
His foot was caught, and nothing he could do had set him free
A few could get in far enough to hear Floyd Collins speak
The crowd above grew bigger, as all hope grew ever bleaker
Yeah!
So many times his rescuers knew him just within a grasp
But Floyd's sanity eroded as his voice turned to a rasp
While minds and plans of action one by one saw each other bust
And men with nerves of iron felt resolving darkness rust
For there never is a rescue, and no salvation for the doomed
Floyd Collins crawled alive one day into his very tomb
It was weeks until they could exhume his lifeless shell
His soul sent to a journey far from that sandstone hell
