Mas una noche, una inesperada intrusa llegó al castillo buscando cobijarse de una tormenta. Como regalo, ofreció al príncipe una simple rosa. Repugnado por su aspecto, el príncipe expulsó a la anciana, pero ella le advirtió que no se dejará engañar por las apariencias, porque la belleza se encuentra en el interior. Cuando volvió a rechazarla, la apariencia exterior de la anciana se desapareció dando paso a una bellísima hеchicera. El príncipe imploró su perdón, pеro ya era tarde, pues ella había visto que en su corazón no había amor. Como castigo le transformó en una horrible bestia y lanzó un poderoso hechizo sobre el castillo y sobre todos los que allí vivían. Los días se convirtieron en años y el príncipe y sus criados fueron olvidados por el mundo. La hechicera había borrado su recuerdo de la mente de sus seres queridos. Sin embargo, la rosa que ella le había ofrecido era una rosa encantada. Si él era capaz de aprender a amar a una mujer y ganarse a cambio su amor antes de que cayera el último pétalo, se desharía el hechizo. Si no, permanecería condenado a seguir siendo una bestia para siempre. Al pasar los años, comenzó a impacientarse y perdió toda esperanza, pues ¿quién iba a ser capaz de amar a una bestia?
