Legba Lyrics by Heading South

0

In the short story "Heading South", there is examples of interpretation in this story. In the story, Brenda the main narrator, takes a lover, Legba with the approval of her husband. Brenda, very confused on how her husband was allowing her to do this, couldn't believe what her husband was letting her do.
"But just then Legba came back and my husband only had time to whisper, "I want you to." I was totally taken aback by his behavior; it was the first time he'd ever acted like that. I completely lost my head." In this passage from the story, I think that there are multiple interpretations of this situation. Could her husband get turned on by men? Or does he get turned on by watching his wife take another man? There are multiple interpretations that this situation could go in.

This story is broken up into different sections where different people say their piece and then it switches to another person. Th amount of lust and jealousy in this short story is one on its own. If I was to identify it with another story we had read, I would make a connection to "The Harem", where in that short story, the main character is a bit of a womanizer and one who lusted after women.
I think this is an example of a versimultude. All the characters are very honesty about their wants and emotions, and aren't afraid the describe who or what they hate. It has a romantic quality as well, because there is so much controversy over this young prostitute, Legba. He has the ability to woo any woman and for women to fall in love with him.He is the definition of a man who has control over women.
Legba, is actually the name of the voodoo symbol, who is the spirit who is the gatekeeper of the spirit world. Legba is also associated with being a "life giver". I think the author of this sort named him Legba on purpose, because he has the essence to restore or give "life" to lustful women.
