[Verse] An artist sits in front of a blank canvas, glaring at the empty space Searching for ideas, his mind begins to race He wants to express the pain that he feels on a daily basis The tragedies of war the mind refuses to erase It was 1944, year of the Second World War A young man’s hidden potential lies behind closed doors Blessed with the gift of artistic talent Creating daily masterpieces with a paintbrush swirling every canvas seamless His dream was to become a famous artist and travel the world He mapped and plotted every step along the path Unknowingly his life was ‘bout to take a drastic turn A draft notice broke his every dream in half So off to war he went, he kissed his mother goodbye for the last time A tear rolled down his cheek as he knew she was slowly dying And he couldn’t bear to leave but he didn’t have a choice That’s what happens when the government takes away your voice Now the paintbrush is replaced with an MP 40 Swept into a war zone with no preparation or warning Early morning rifles drills and marching until the night Drill instructors screaming in his face He had to learn to fight, not only for his country, but also for his sanity ‘cause after the bootcamp when they dropped him in Nazi Germany He hit the ground on April 5th of 1944 Scared to death with no idea of the horror in store And it was quiet, too quiet, the silence eerie They moved east along the hillside until they reached a clearing And (blaow!) shots rang out and the soldiers they started dropping The man next to him caught one in the chest and fell on top of him He grabbed his rifle, saw the Axis soldiers up ahead Cocked it back and blasted one of ‘em in the head He shot a few more then hid behind a bush and reloaded That’s when twenty feet away from him a hand grenade exploded He felt the blast take off his arm and both of his legs And he laid there bleeding for half an hour ’til they came to save him Completely traumatized, he woke up wishing he was dead The next two years of his life spent in a hospital bed When he got out, shellshocked, couldn’t deal with the pain But with one arm left, he realized he could still paint Decided to paint a picture of that single day of war Olive green hillsides covered in guts and gore Same cool gray clouds and the sky is Tuscan red A soldier lies in the foreground shot with a musket dead Sunburst yellow reflecting from the sun’s glare The same single hand grenade flying through the air And when he stepped back, to look at his creation was unbearable As painting left handed, he saw the picture was terrible To symbolize the pain to which his life had been diminished… He blew his brains all over the canvas and it was finally finished
