Backfire (Better with James) Lyrics by Wild Rivers, James Vincent McMorrow

2024

[Verse 1: Devan Glover]
From the second we met, I knew you'd be significant
Started out as a friend, something was different
Folding laundry on the basement floor and splitting a cigarette
But only when we're drinking 'cause we swore on that
Never said it out loud, secretly I was wishing it
[Pre-Chorus: Devan Glover]
But it was too hot to touch, double-edged
You were in my gut, now you're stuck in my head
Can't sleep it off, been wondering
[Chorus: Devan Glover]
Maybe if we never bet on better timing
Waiting for the other one to break the silence
Holding our breath until we turned blue
Then we would've made it to the other side, and
Even if we failed, at least we'd know we tried it
I always wanted it to be you and I
Now we're caught up in the backfire
[Verse 2: James Vincent McMorrow]
It's so easy to lose your way
Drive like there's something in headlights in front of you
You can reach
You roll to a stop just beside the lake
[Pre-Chorus: James Vincent McMorrow]
But it's too cold to swim, water's edge
You're in my head, close to the end
It's deep enough, I'm diving in
[Chorus: Devan Glover & James Vincent McMorrow]
Maybe if we never bet on better timing
Waiting for the other one to break the silence
Holding our breath until we turned blue
Then we would've made it to the other side, and
Even if we failed, at least we'd know we tried it
I always wanted it to be you and I
[Bridge: Devan Glover, Wild Rivers & James Vincent McMorrow]
Oh, and if we did it all again
And nothing was the same
Would we end up here anyway?
[Chorus: James Vincent McMorrow, Devan Glover, Devan Glover & James Vincent McMorrow]
Maybe if we never bet on better timing
Waiting for the other one to break the silence
Holding our breath until we turned blue
Then we would've made it to the other side, and
Even if we failed, at least we'd know we tried it
I always wanted it to be you and I
[Outro: Devan Glover & James Vincent McMorrow, Devan Glover]
Now we're caught up in the backfire, oh
Caught up in the backfire, mm
Caught up in the backfire, mm, mm
I always wanted it to be you and I
