Fred Lyrics by Jeff Smith

Fear of a Black Messiah

2019

(Intro: Fred Hampton)
We say
We always say, the Black Panther Party, that they can do anything they want to to us
We might not be back
I might be in jail
I might be anywhere
But when I leave, remember I said with the last words on my list that
"I am a revolutionary"
And you're going to have to keep sayin that
You gonna have to say that I am a prototerian
I am the people, I’m not the pig
You got to make a decision
And the people are going to have to attack the pig
The people are going to have to stand up against the pig
That's what the Panthers are doing
That's what the Panthers are doing all over the world

(Verse 1)
I was born 08-30-48, and my name is Fred
Raised in the Chi by both of my old heads
They were from Louisiana, worked for Argo Starch
They had an athletic child who was also smart
Desired to play baseball, center field for the Yankees
Graduated with honors, hit college, they can’t tame me
Majored in pre-law and learned the legal system
No police brutality on my watch, I holler Get em
NAACP had me organize the youth
I was a great leader, the community were my troops
Tryna push social change with nonviolent activism
But the FBI would slow us down like our metabolism
I'm tryna get us more upgraded centers for recreation
I'm pushing for resources to expand our education
I joined the Black Panther Party with a few of my boys
We called the Chitown gangs and killed all the noise
Cause killing each other does nothing but keep us all in poverty
The whole city know I organize properly
I taught political education and gathered up my peeps
Put a team together to police the police
Fed the impoverished kids breakfast, all free
Now J. Edgar Hoover got his eyes on me
He feared our ideology, and put us under fire
Formed COINTELPRO to kill off so called black messiahs
They tapped my mama phone in February 68
Feds labeled me to be key militant leader by May
Later that year, they recruited Bill O'Neal
And for his auto theft charges to be expunged, he'd squeal
In exchange for infiltrating the Panthers
We let him join and trouble spreaded like a cancer
Became Director of Chapter and my bodyguard
The Feds used old Bill to cause a rift to start
Between the Panthers and the Rangers, in a different park
Feds zooming through our hood, tearing all our shit apart
Releasing racist comic strips, still on that tacky shit
Lying talking about we don't fuck with white activists
Hoover said eradicate the serve the people program and destroy we what we stand for
But this is why we plan forward
They provoked wars amongst the black movement
My lady pregnant with my first born, I keep it moving
Moved closer to the headquarters, ready for Armageddon
But thanks to Bill, the pigs knew that's where we kept our weapons
The whole fiasco was disheartening
The sucka even drew the pigs a blueprint of my apartment
Early November, I held a speech at UCLA
And linked up with the Black Panther Party from the Bay
I got promoted to Chief of Staff and major spokesman
2 cops lost their lives when I was out of town, they say a Panther smoked em
Police shot the shooter down and charged another male
With murder, a Panther by the name of Lawrence Bell
I held a course at the church on December 3rd
Ate dinner sipping sedatives, went to sleep and couldn't hear a word
O’Neal slipped the drug in my drink at supper
Later I fell asleep on the phone with my mother
December 4th 69 the day Hov was born
Police was outside my home like 4 in the morn
Eight in the front, six in the back
They kicked in and saw a shottie on Mark Clark’s lap
In my living room seated, Mark Clark was a friend to me
Pigs shot him in the chest and he died instantly
He let off one round, before he expired
Then holes got blown into my room due to automatic gunfire
I was still passed out from the sedatives
My pregnant fiancee wasn't hit, gotta thank God they made it
But all my blood is spilling upon the bed
And they put my lights out by putting two in my head
My name was Fred, but understand the life I led
For the rights of my people I bled
I was feared cause I was educated, and the group I delegated
Black power for life, I died being dedicated
Black messiah
