Spencer the Rover Lyrics by Jim Moray

2024

This tune was composed by Spencer the Rover
\nWho travelled round England and most parts of Wales
\nHe had been much reduced which caused great confusion
\nAnd that was the reason he started to roam
\n
\nIn Yorkshire near Rotherham he beening on his ramble
\nAnd weary of travelling, he sat down to rest
\nBy the foot of yon mountain there runs a clear fountain
\nWith bread and cold water himself did refresh
\n
\nAnd it tasted much sweeter than the gold he had wasted
\nSweeter than honеy and it gave more content
\nBut thе thoughts of his children lamenting their father
\nBrought tears to his eyes and it made him lament
\n
\nWith the night fast approaching to the woods he resorted
\nWith woodbine and ivy his bed for to make
\nThere he thought about sighing, lamenting and crying
\nGo home to your family and rambling forsake
\n
\nOn the fifth day of November, I’ve a reason to remember
\nWhen first he arrived home to his family and wife
\nThey stood so surprised when first he arrived
\nAnd welcomed this stranger once more in their sight
\n
\nAnd his children gathered round him with prittle-prattling stories
\nPrittle-prattling stories to drive cares away
\nWell now they’re united like birds of one feather
\nLike bees in one hive contented they’ll stay
\n
\nSo now they are living in the cottage contented
\nWith woodbine and ivy growing all round the door
\nAs happy as those that’s got thousands of riches
\nContented they’ll stay and not ramble no more\n\n
