The Golden Glove Lyrics by Jim Moray

Skulk

2012

Well it's of a young squire, in Tamworth we hear
Courted a nobleman's daughter so fair
All for to marry her, well it was his intent
And his friends and relations gave their consent
Well the day was decided for their wedding day
A farmer was appointed, for to give her away
But soon as this lady, the farmer did spy
Oh her heart was inflamed and bitterly she cried
She's turned from the squire, but nothing she's said
Instead of getting married she took to her bed
The thoughts of the farmer soon ran in her mind
And a way for to have him, she quickly did find
Waistcoat and trousers, this young girl put on
And she went out a-hunting with a dog and with gun
Hunted around where the farmer did dwell
Because in her heart, oh, she loved him quite well
It's oft time she's spied, and nothing she killed
Until this young farmer came into the field
For to talk with him, it was her intent
With a dog and with gun, oft to meet him she went
"I thought you'd have been at the wedding" she cried
"To wait on the squire and to give him his bride"
"Oh no", says the farmer, "I'll take my sword in my hand
By honour I'll gain her, wherever she commands"
Well the lady was pleased when she heard him so bold
She gave him a glove that was made out of gold
She told him she had found it as she's walking along
As she went out a-hunting with dog and with gun
And the lady went home with a heart full of love
Sent out a notice that she'd lost her glove
"Whoever has found it and will bring it to me
Well whoever it is, oh my husband shall be"
The farmer was pleased when he heard of the news
And with a heart full of love, to the lady he goes
"Oh lady, oh lady, I've picked up your glove
And now I shall be pleased if you'll grant me some love"
"Oh It's already granted, I will be your bride
For I love the sweet breath of the farmer she cried
I'll be the mistress of your dairy, and I'll milk all your cows
While my jolly young farmer, comes whistling at the plough"
And it's when they got married, they told of the fun
How she went out a-hunting with dog and with gun
