Selous Lyrics by John Edmond

2018

Once there was an English Schoolboy who′d heard many a tale
\nAnd dreamed to be a great white hunter out on the ivory trail;
\nLived his dream and sailed away to Africa's far shore
\nFrom the Cape to wild Zambezi all the land he did explore
\n
\nAlone in heat and cold with raging fever he survived;
\nFearless in the face of danger of wild beasts and savage tribes
\nAll his journeys weren't in vain for many a trail he blazed
\nFor colonies now come and gone where the Union Jack was raised
\n
\n"Oh good Lord deliver us!" He would often have to pray
\n[Nightjar call] ...He would hear the night jar say. Ay ay
\n
\nSaw the awesome beauty of each creature he chanced to spy
\nFrom the power of elephant and lion to the fragile butterfly
\nHis trophies and his specimens were for all the world to see
\nOn walls of institutions of natural history
\n
\nIn his honor there's so much that bears the name of this great man
\nFrom creatures of the wild to regiments and even tracts of land
\nThough he was a ruthless hunter, wished his fellow man no harm
\nBut in wars and rebellion didn't want to take up arms
\n
\n"Oh good Lord deliver us! Do soldiers have to die?"
\n[Nightjar call] ...Called the Night Jar in reply. Ai Ai
\n
\nIce blue eyes and his demeanor won him friendships far and wide
\nFrom presidents of mighty lands to chiefs of the humblest tribe
\nHe was a wild explorer who loved peace and solitude
\nDriven by his quest for freedom and his fortitude
\n
\nT'was by the rifle bullet that his hunter trade he plied
\nAnd by the sniper's bullet strange to say was how he died
\nIn his beloved Africa in a lonely grave he lies
\nHyenas laugh and jackals call but his spirit never dies
\n
\n"Oh good Lord deliver us! Into your heavenly home."
\n[Nightjar call] ...Now the Night Jar weeps alone, alone
\n
\nWho was this English schoolboy with so much to see and do?
\nWho was this ruthless hunter the spirit of fear he never knew?
\nWho was this wild explorer with the friendly eyes of blue?
\nHe was Frederick Courtney Selous
\n
\nOh good Lord deliver us!
\nOh good Lord deliver us!
\n[Nightjar call] ...The Night Jar remembers you
\n
\nOh good Lord deliver us
\nOh good Lord deliver us
\n[Nightjar call] ...the Night Jar remembers you!
