Day and Night Lyrics by John Richard Cornwall

0

I cannot explain how the day has undone
itself from a new dawn to this new evening
in which I sit, the sky desperate for stars
and moments that are not awful or damaged.
Something must have happened.
I telephoned, twice, but had no reply.
It could have been by accident or coincidence,
it does not matter which, but such an idle ringing
has left a space here that has become impossible
to fill.
All day the day has gathered images and words
that magnify this absence that arranges everything.
I look for composure and notice the inessential trinkets
that mark the passage of lives, signatures of other
times and places.
There is the Wedgwood dog from Highgate,
as distant from the common good as the grave
of Marx, huge and unavoidable.
And the ticket stub that was left when the sun
lifted over Wimbledon and the tennis whites
entertained a crowd and a Princess.
But now the mirrors have no reflections,
they are barren and ornamental, the room
a cause of depression, sullen and unlovely
as the face I use.
A photograph on the mantle calls, congratulates,
but cannot fill this space, this dread.
Now unable to remember names or telephone
numbers there is nothing left but silence
and a night that is long and distracted,
sequences of time without stars or pity.
