The desk in our apartment is where my work gets done
My chair creaks like a mattress.  The coffee’s never warm for long
It’s not the corner office, but it’s quiet and it’s fine
That was true until that family moved into #409
They made an awful racket right above my head
They were running back and forth like fools jumping off the beds
It’s hard enough to focus, I cursed under my breath
The stress welled up inside me.  My hands went to my head
Footsteps on the ceiling
Something’s going on
Muffled conversations
We will never know
Later, in the evening, after dinner, you and I
Curled up on the couch, finishing our wine
It started up again. We looked up at the noise
You said  “those are the Johnson kids”, the beautiful blond boys
The younger’s one’s not doing well.  His mother said, “stage 4”
I lean my head into my hand.  His name is Logan, 3 years old
Footsteps on the ceiling
Something’s going on
Muffled conversations
We will never know
Busy work days blur like cars on Highway 59
But now each time I hear those boys upstairs I smile
I see Logan chase his brother, light and joy in his blue eyes
I hope that many years from now, at the drugstore down the road
I run into Logan’s mama, and she fills me in on her two boys
Summer jobs and college, girlfriends they adore
Home is just too quiet now.  I close my eyes and still I hear those
Footsteps on the ceiling
Something going on
Muffled conversations
We will never know
