The Mute Page: 6 Lyrics by Kalee Fetters

The Mute

2021

I held out my hand for him, “I’m Cassidy. It’s nice to meet you Daniel.” I said in a calmer, sweeter tone than the one I had taken to him earlier. “Sorry about my rudeness?” I said, questionable, as all he did was look at my hand. He took it softly and shook it slowly. He looked up from the floor at me. His eyes bemused, still that vivid electric blue. So prominent from all other eyes now looking at me. I looked at him for a second, soaking in his everything. All his features, he finally spoke. “It’s fine.” He spat out before letting go. I noticed his tooth gap.
Us three talked the whole way through lunch. Daniel was cool, and I never really realized how much I missed being around Corbyn when he wasn’t around. Lunch ended. I walked and talked with Kay and Gabbie the rest of the day before we had to go home. I drove with Kay, as we jammed out to One Direction as we did everytime we drove together. Getting home was a relief I didn’t have to deal with people anymore.
One week later. My first week and a half of school have been amazing. I’ve become great friends with both Corbyn and Daniel. It’s funny how much I have in common with a person who doesn’t speak, but he’s sweet. He has really good intentions and Daniel’s the same. They’re so close. I would assume Daniel was there before Corbyn decided to stop talking, in general. I got up and showered. The house seemed oddly quiet, but I blew it off and continued to get ready. I put on a cropped light blue tank top with a cute dark blue dot design. I put on my favorite pair of mom jeans. I did my hair and put on natural makeup. I threw on my custom blue butterfly airforces and a scrunchie. I grabbed my bag and phone, running down the stairs. When I got to the living room all I saw was mom and Ollie sleeping together on the couch. Ollie was cuddled up into moms chest and it was the cutest thing ever. I grabbed an apple and headed out the door to my car. I got coffee and headed to school.
I walked in and walked to Kay’s locker, she wasn’t at home this morning. She was getting out her books when I hugged her from behind. She turned around and looked at me, her smile growing. “Why weren’t you home this morning?” I asked as she slammed her locker shut and began walking me to mine. She said that she went to Gabbie’s to check on her, because she was sick. I nodded and left her for my AP English class.
I walked to my seat, Jonah still isn’t here. He hasn’t been for a week, it’s not like I care, I just hate sitting by myself. Today we were doing a rough draft for a poem about nature. It’s a cheesy topic but I’m so excited to be doing it. The class went by fast, you know what they say, time flies when you’re having fun. I packed up and walked out the door, when suddenly I was pulled into a small janitors closet. It was dark and the only thing I could see was his eyes. I moved as far away from him as possible, only about 4 inches between us. Before flipping the light switch, turning on the hanging light. It was Jonah as I suspected. His right eye was an odd shade of purple, his lip was cut. He looked like he hadn’t eaten anything in a week, he was pale. I looked him up and down. He looked broken both inside and out. His green eyes were dull. Looking at him, his blood stained white t-shirt and grass stained knees, and his cut up face, hurt me. I have no idea why, he really wasn’t my favorite person. His cocky attitude and the fact that he thinks he’s better than everyone. Though as I looked at him all I felt was pity, sorrow and pain. He hadn’t said a word since he got in here, “What happened? Who did this to you?” I asked, impatiently. He looked down at his hands, I hadn’t noticed until now but his knuckles were bloody. I closed the gap between us about 2 inches. He looked at me, I raised my hand and pressed it softly to his right cheek. I, slowly and softly, began to rub his swollen bruised eye back and forth with my thumb. He flinched. I move my thumb down to his lip. His green eyes staring into mine.
I started tearing up, just staring at him. The tears at the brim of my eyes, everything about his new demeanor scared me, hurt me. His perfect posture leaning slightly. “Oh god.” I muttered under my breath. His eyes started to tear up as well, “I’m fine.” he stated in a strained voice. I knew he was lying, obviously by his appearance but also by the look in his eyes. I looked at him in disbelief.
