The Mute Page: 7 Lyrics by Kalee Fetters

The Mute

2021

“No Jonah Marais, you are not going to lie to me right now! You’re hurt, and I want to help you.” I stated. I was being straight forward, I might not like him very much but he needed someone. I waited and he still didn’t answer, “Now, if you’re fine then why am I in this closet with you?” I questioned him. He went red for a second.
“I’ll tell you when we’re not at school.” he said, his voice was hoarse. Almost like he had been screaming.
I took his hand and unlocked the door. I opened it a little and peeked out. Nobody was in thе halls, so I grabbed his hand and pulled him down the hall. I pullеd him toward my car, I was skipping school, yes and that was wrong, yes, but Jonah needed me and I needed to know what happened. We got in his car and I shoved the keys in the ignition, starting the car as fast as possible. We drove off, fast, toward Jonah’s house. Kay had taken my car so we had to drive his. It was silent other than when I asked Jonah if we could go to his house because my mom was home and I didn’t want her or Ollie to meet Jonah, especially not like this. His parents were out of town and his little sister was staying at a friends house so it was okay to be there. When I pulled up to the house, I was shocked but also not so much, due to his douchey rich boy persona. I helped Jonah out of the car. He limped to his front door and unlocked it. When I walked in my mouth fell open. His house had this really clean, expensive look to it. “Beautiful.” I mumbled, under my breath.
Jonah came in behind me, slowly. “Like it?” he said, chuckling. I closed my mouth, straightening up. I turned slightly pink and followed him to his bathroom. I sat on the sink as he bent down and grabbed the first aid kit from the cabinet under the sink. He handed it to me, took a step in front of me, standing between my legs. I opened the kit pulling out a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol, to clean it. I dabbed his lip lightly, he flinched.
“Sorry, this might hurt a little.” I said, quietly. He gave me a duh look, still flinching everytime the cotton touched his skin. After cleaning all his wounds, I put one of those band aids, that are split in the middle, on his eyebrow and lip. After I was done I put my hand on his cheek again, rubbing my thumb on his bruise. He leaned his face into my hand, his face going from it’s usual hard facial expression to a soft, sad one. He was in pain. I wanted to know why but didn’t want to rush him. He put his hand on mine, rubbing his thumb on the back of my hand. I grabbed his left hand in mine, moving my right hand off his face. He stepped back and I jumped off the counter. I walked out of the bathroom to the kitchen, where I opened the freezer, grabbing an ice pack. I hand it to him and he puts it on his eye. I sat down on the kitchen counter as he leaned on the counter, next to me. I looked at him, watching his careful movement, staring at the chain around his neck. Admiring the little bit of his chest I could see down his shirt. He looked over at me, his green eyes baring into my brown ones. My heart stopped as he looked at me, removing the ice pack from his face.
“You really need to ke-” I started, before he interrupted me with a kiss. He moved between my legs as our lips moved together. His lips were soft, yet rough against mine. I enjoyed it, kind of. I’m not saying he’s a bad kisser, because he’s great, it’s just he’s not the person I wanted to do this with. I pulled away, the panic finally setting in. I quickly pushed him out of the way, not hard, and rushed toward the door. I grabbed my backpack, yelled bye and walked home. I didn’t really care what happened anymore, I didn’t care that I left him there like that, and I really didn’t care if I’d ever see him again. The only thing I cared about right now was whether I could get home from Jonah’s house. I was just wondering, lost, around Texas, having no clue what was going on when a car pulled up to me. I was honestly scared. It was 6, the sun was setting and add me being a 17 year old girl, that seems like the perfect conditions for kidnapping someone. The car came to a complete stop, right next to me. The mysterious person slowly and ominously rolled down their window. My hand instinctively went toward my back pocket, reaching for my phone.
Whoever this person was finally, after 2 long agonizing minutes, opened the window and peeked their head out. I knew instantly, just by looking at those bright blue balls he calls eyes. My heart rate slowed and I had a sudden urge to punch him in the face. He unlocked the door and pushed the car door open. I hopped into the passenger's seat, as he sat back in the drivers side. I settled into the new, unfamiliar environment of Daniel’s car. He was sniggering quietly to myself. I punched him in the shoulder, “You can’t do that to a person!” I yelled at him. His laugh got louder as he rubbed his shoulder.
“Ouch that hurt!” he said, in a really odd tone. I had no choice but to laugh. He looked at me, “No but seriously, what are you doing out here wandering around?” he was just putting the keys in the ignition. I looked at my feet, I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t want to tell him about the kiss because he might tell Corbyn and he can’t know otherwise he might think I don’t like him. Daniel’s car started moving slowly. “Or not.” he said, disappointment filling his voice. He didn’t talk to me for the whole ride until he asked me where I lived. It was awkward and weird, the tension between us only grew because we were right next to each other. We pulled up to my house about half an hour later, the silence still lingering as I stepped out. I thanked him and rushed to my front door. I waved at him and walked in the front door. My mom was in the kitchen cooking, Kay was on the couch on her phone while Ollie was sitting next to her watching Paw Patrol, on the TV. My mom looked up from cutting the tomatoes, her face lit up when she saw it was me.
Her face looked questionable for a second, “Where were you?” I looked at her, setting my back on the floor by the table, “Got a ride home from a friend.” I stated, quickly. Walking, as fast as possible, up the stairs toward my room. Giving Kay the ‘I need to talk to you look’ on my way. She nodded, I could hear her coming up the stairs behind me. I walked in my room and sat on my bed. The tears finally came to my eyes, I hadn’t realized I wanted to cry until this moment. I knew I was going to have to explain everything to Kay, and of course I trusted her. I mean she’s been there for me since we were kids, it’s just I didn’t want to spill to her that I liked Corbyn. I didn’t want to tell her that me and Jonah kissed. I didn’t want to talk about the multiple moments me and Jonah had. After what felt like hours, Kay walked in. She noticed I was crying and ran over to sit next to me. She wrapped her arms around me and pulled me into her chest, softly. I sobbed quietly into her shirt as she stroked my head, in a caring way. She shushed me in a delicate tone, rocking me back and forth. Her attempts to calm me down were effective, as they always were. After a few minutes of crying I mustered up the courage to look up at her. Her shirt had a giant tear stain on it from my sobs. I looked into her beautiful hazel eyes, so full of kindness and compassion.
"Okay, you ready to tell me what happened?” she asked, kindly helping me stand. I nodded. I then proceeded to tell her everything, from Jonah pulling me into the closet at school, to Daniel picking me up off the side of the road, as she walked me to my bathroom. She nodded, sympathetically, every once in a while to show she was listening. She sat me on the toilet wiping the smudged mascara off my face with a makeup wipe. After she was done she walked away, back into my room. I watched as she walked toward my closet, pulling out a black “Midnight Memories” hoodie and a pair of black Nike shorts from my drawer. She walked back to me slowly, not saying anything. Now she was just humming Midnight Memories to herself, running the bath water. After the water was hot enough she put the plug in the tub, her humming turned into words. “Tell me that I'm wrong but I do what I please. Way too many people in the Addison Lee. Now I'm at the age when I know what I need, oh, whoa” she sang, her voice soft and cool. She helped me undress as I started singing with her, “Midnight memories. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. Baby, you and me. Stumblin' in the street” We sang together, as she helped me undress. My voice was a little hoarse from sobbing but this moment was still so fun. She helped me into the tube and walked out of the room still singing. I hummed silently to myself as I sunk into the warm bath water, feeling calm. The whole world kind of just slipped away, all my worries, all the problems, all gone for just a few minutes.
