The Shy One Page: 11 Lyrics by Kalee Fetters

The Shy One

2020

I walked up to his desk, “So what's going on with you and Seavey?” he asked, wiggling his eyebrows. I explained to him what has been going on between me and Daniel. He listened and gave me some advice, I took it to heart. We did our handshake one last time before I left for my Gym class. The school day was fast, lunch with Gabbie was really fun, she’s a great person. After school it was game time, I was so excited that I ran into the locker room and put on my pads and jersеy as fast as possible. I walked out in a matter of minutеs only to be pushed against the wall. It was obviously Daniel, he pulled me into a slow passionate kiss that lasted no more than a minute. He let go and wished me luck before sprinting toward the field. This man has a problem with messing around with me and then walking away. I sprint behind him toward the boys, we discuss the game plan and we are off. In the middle of the game, some guy from the other team tackled me, which normally wouldn't bother me but this time my head hit the ground hard. Though my helmet was on, it only protected my head to a certain degree. My ears started to ring, my vision got blurry and I attempted to stand up but fell on the ground instantly. I took my helmet off as I felt I needed to throw up, I moved my head to the side and tree up all over myself. I instantly knew I had a concussion because coach explained to us the symptoms, just in case. My eyes started to feel droopy as I blacked out. I don't really remember what happened after that, but I did wake up being carried on a stretcher, and then I woke up again when the doctor was giving me a check up. I heard the doctor walk outside and say my name but it wasn’t my name. He walked outside with his clipboard, “Anyone here for Adelaine Marie Frantzich” I heard a little screech then Jonah's voice, “No! That's not right. Her last name is Harris. My last name is Frantzich, that doesn't work!” he sounded scared. I looked at the door and in the doorway the doctor was attempting to calm Jonah down.

“Look sir. Harris is her temporary surname, her birth certificate says her last name is Frantzich. I would assume her adoptive parents wanted to give her their last name. But sir, Harris is not her birth surname. Also, her birth parents aren't Debbie and Jimmy Harris,” the doctor stated before Jonah interrupted him. “Doc, let me see that birth certificate, now!” the doctor walked into my room and grabbed a file from the table. He handed it to Jonah and apparently whatever was printed on that paper Jonah didn't like, because he ran out of the hospital as everyone else came in my room. Daniel abruptly ran to me, took my hand, pulled it close to his mouth and kissed it softly. I could see the tears on the verge of falling from his eyes, seeing Daniel like this hurt me but I couldn't move. I wasn't in any pain but my body wouldn’t move like I was in a state of paralysis. Jonah came into the room shortly after freaking out, Jack walked up to him and walked him over to the couch, “Calm down man.” Jack said as he sat Jonah down. Jonah just sat there and stared at me, his thoughts running so fast I couldn’t read him. I looked back and Daniel, “Please just wake up.” he mumbled, over and over again. I tried to move, my toes only twitching slightly. “Come on Adelaine!” I said to myself quietly, Daniel heard me and jumped slightly. My eyes opened fully as I tried to push my body up with my hands, which didn't help because my body was so weak. “A little help!” I said urgently. Daniel put his arms on my sides and pulled me up, so I could sit up.

“Hey Jo Jo, what’s wrong?” I asked, holding my arms out to him. He got up and walked toward me, putting his arms around my small body and placing his head on my chest. He started to cry silently, I just shushed him and rubbed his back. After a few minutes the doctor walked in but I still held Jonah, “So Ms.Frantzich can go home now, just make sure she doesn't go to sleep.” the doctor stated clearly before walking out of the room. My face went pale, he just called me by Jonah's last name. Jonah pulled away and looked at me, sad. “Did he just call me Ms.Frantzich?” I asked Jonah quietly. Jonah just nodded, “So I'm you, you’re” I stuttered out, I couldn't even finish the sentence. “Yes, you're my twin sister.” he stated clearly. My jaw dropped in shock, I pulled him into another hug. I had a family that I didn't know about. Daniel helped me get up and Chrissy helped me into the bathroom to change, when we got there I looked at her she looked nervous. ‘I should have told her.' her thoughts said it all.

I put my shirt on, “YOU KNEW!” I screamed, “You knew my family was okay and you didn't tell me!”

“No, no, I wanted to tell you,” she said, getting closer to me. I moved out of the way toward the door, “I can't believe you!” I screamed before walking out the door, slamming it behind me. I walked up to Daniel with tears in my eyes, “Take me home.” I said quietly. He grabbed my hand and walked me to his car. He held me close to him as we walked making sure I didn't fall, as we got in I mumbled to myself, “She knew, and she didn't tell me.” Daniel stopped before starting the car, “It's ok Addy.” he said, putting his hand on my cheek and softly rubbing his thumb against my face. I leaned into his hand, my tears catching on his thumb as they fell down my face. He wiped them away, “How could she just not tell me!” I screamed, before breaking down into tears. He held me as I cried, after about an hour I finally calmed down. My head hurt really bad, he pulled my face close to his and gave me a quick peck before finally starting the car. We drove to his house and since I wasn't allowed to sleep, we stayed up all night eating snacks and watching movies.

It's been three days since I found out that Jonah was my twin, I haven't talked to Christina or my family since that day. I've been staying with Daniel, I've become best friends with his sister Anna but his brothers, Tyler and Christian, just spend their time trying to annoy me. I'm supposed to go meet Jonah's parents, I guess my mom and dad but they abandoned me so they aren't my parents. It's been a burning question for 17 years about why the heck my mom hates me enough to not want me. Even though I've had this thought a lot through my life, it has become more of a prominent thought since I found out a few days ago. I woke up around 10 which is later than when I would normally wake up but I'm not meeting Timothy and Carrie until 12. I got out of bed seeing the light blue walls of Daniel's room, still a new environment from the bright yellow walls of my room. The three guitars that hung on his wall cast shadows on the floor, I got hit with a bright ray of sun when I sat up. Daniel was still sleeping beside me, so I got up as quietly as possible. I went to his bathroom and put on a yellow Led Zepplun shirt and black cargo pants. I put on some makeup, I was in the middle of braiding my hair when I felt hands wrap around me. Daniel put his head on my shoulder. “Morning Dani.” I said, turning around to face him. My brain was way too scattered to even bother reading him at all.
