“Why did you run away this morning?” he whispered, softly. His voice was a melody on replay in my head. Everything he said just replayed in my mind over and over, even when he wasn’t around. I didn’t know what to say, I turned bright red and thought about what happened this morning. His singing replayed itself inside my head, the lines just a vividly euphonious in my head as when he was actually singing it. I looked down at my paper and started to work on the problems but my brain wasn’t focusing on math, it was focused on Daniel and what he was doing next to me. He was not doing math, he was writing something, I leaned over a bit to see what he was doing. He was writing sheet music? I know he plays instruments and sings but he also writes music. He is such an intriguing person, I want to know what he is thinking. I tapped him on the shoulder.
He jumped slightly and hid the sheet music, “What are you doing?” I asked, intrigued. He looked at me and I looked into his eyes, ‘Writing a song about love, about…’ he thought but in real time he said it was nothing, not allowing him to finish his thought. I didn’t know who the song was about and I really didn’t want to know, because it wasn’t going to be me. Wait! I didn’t want it to be about me, did I? No Adelaine stop it!
The bell rang and I ran out of the classroom before everyone else. I was so excited for the end of the day that it went by so slow. I ate a salad for lunch, I sat with Chrissy and the boys. I didn’t talk to anyone at the table other than Jonah, we whispered to each other about football plays and the players on the team. Jonah is really cool, and fun to talk too. Daniel kept looking at us and giving Jonah mean glances, we both just ignored him and continued to talk. Everyone else at the table was really confused, because I can normally barely speak full sentences in front of them. After lunch, Zach was in all my classes, he kept annoying me and wouldn’t stop talking to me. He said that he would stop if I talked to him, but I didn’t let him ruin my mood. The end of the day came and I practically ran toward the girls locker room, where all the cheer girls were getting ready. I rushed into the room, quickly throwing on throwing on some black leggings and a Justin Herbert t-shirt and blue ombre sports shoes. I grab a mirror and clean off my makeup, and put my hair in a ponytail. “Are you actually this excited about cheer practice?!” Jenn said, in a snotty tone. I looked at her and shook my head. She looked at me shocked, “Then why are you dressing out?” she asked. I looked up at her and shrugged my shoulders, I walked over to Chrissy. She hugged me and whispered you got this. I waved bye as I walked out of the locker room. I jogged toward the football field, toward the coach, who was patiently waiting for me to join.
He saw me and waved me over, I jogged closer and closer, feet, inches, until there was only about a foot of space between us. My heart pounded out of my chest, I smiled nervously. “You must be Adelaine, I’ve heard plenty of good things about you. Let's hope they’re true.” he said. I giggled, and he let out a deep throaty laugh. He was very intimidating, his laugh sent shivers down my spine and I think he noticed. I wasn’t looking at him, he could tell I was nervous, “You don’t talk much do you?” he asked, thoughtfully. I looked up at him, I shook my head and he nodded. He rubbed my shoulder, sympathetically, “Anyone on the team, you are comfortable with? Maybe, someone you can practice and talk to, until you get used to being around everyone?” he said. He cared about me being comfortable, he was a very kind yet scary looking man. I looked at him, “Yeah..” was all I could say. I turned my head and noticed Jonah and the other boys walking toward me and coach, I pointed at Jonah and the coach smiled. “He’s a good guy isn’t he?” he said, letting another throaty chuckle. I smiled and nodded, “Yeah, he is. He really is.” I mumbled. “MARAIS!” he yelled as loud as his deep voice could go. Jonah’s head shot up, toward me and coach. He smiled and started running toward us.
