Rhyme and Description in Spenser’s The Faerie Queene Lyrics by Kristen Aldebol

2013

Rhyme and Description in Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene
Goal:
To allow you to interpret the multiple levels of meaning Spenser employs in his allegory, The Faerie Queene, through close attention to rhyme scheme and word choice.
Step 1:
Choose a stanza from our assigned reading for Wednesday, November 13 or Friday, November 15 (instructors can adapt this assignment to any portion of The Faerie Queene that works for your class).
Step 2:
Summarize the content of the stanza, identifying what action is happening and who is doing the action.
Step 3:
Identify the rhyme scheme of your stanza.
Step 4:
Compare the rhyme scheme of your stanza to the standard rhyme scheme of a Spenserian stanza: ababbcbcc. Note what words, if any, alter the rhyme scheme either through eye-rhyme or feminine rhyme (instructors can expand the types of rhyme you're asking students to look at as well). Why might Spenser draw attention to these words through alteration? How might these words affect the reader’s understanding of the line or stanza as a whole?
Step 5:
Identify the characters in your stanza. What are their names? What adjectives does Spenser use to describe these characters in your stanza? Do these adjectives reaffirm your existing impressions of the characters? Undermine your existing impressions? If there is more than one character in your stanza, what is the relationship between the types of adjectives Spenser uses to describe each character? Are they similar adjectives? Contrasting adjectives?
Step 6:
Focusing either on your examinations from Step 4 or Step 5, write a concise description of how the stanza uses variations in rhyme scheme or word choice to affect the reader’s understanding of the text. Explain what Spenser accomplishes by affecting the reader’s understanding in this way.
Step 7:
Create one or more annotations on the proper lines on Poetry Genius that reflect your analysis in Step 6.
***IMPORTANT: Do not highlight the entire stanza you’re looking at as part of your annotation. You should highlight and annotate only the relevant word or words you’re looking at. If there is more than one strange thing happening with the rhyme, annotate those words separately. If you are writing about adjectives, highlight and annotate the noun those adjectives modify.
Step 8:
Upload a word document with your responses to Steps 1-6 and a link to your annotation to the Homework 4 assignment on Smartsite.
