Idle Lyrics by Loverboy

2013

I used to say that I was unproductive because of the Internet.
That it wasn’t really my fault but it was Twitter or Facebook’s fault.
They were my excuses for everything.
But what did that mean?

To say the least, I would blame my inactivity offline on my activity online
To say the least, I would blame my tardiness to school on my parents getting ready when really it was my fault for browsing or playing Pokémon until 3 AM because I couldn’t sleep.

I've come to terms with it, man.
This problem of getting distracted all the time has led me to become a pathological liar
I make excuses when it comes to a lot of things.
I look at my life and I tend to see a lot of strings
Tied into loose knots and I'm just here blaming it on my mom for not teaching me to tie my laces
Whereas I should face it and stop acting like I'm adjacent to neighbor named Ben who got diagnosed with cancer, he can't afford to be complacent
He still does his work and doesn't wait for people to answer to him.
He’s a really hard worker.

Me, I'm far from a hard worker.
I get distracted; I fall off in an instant for certain but that's me.
I hope you trust that it isn't working.
However, I know I’m not alone
Rather this open letter isn't about me and my struggle to put my work in.
This is about me with the countless others who don't understand the words that are spoken

I’m not only speaking on generation Y.
Why lie?
Just believe me when I say
The kids that live today
Are currently delving through
This hole of embarrassment that opens under them when they open up Steam in front of them.
Teachers that are making fun of them now.
But wait.

I'm not telling the kids to just play outside
or that they need to stop staring at some tiny glowing screens
I'm not telling them it's do or die
And to never boot up their stainless steel machines
I just don't want them to lose the bare concept of their dreams
And have the lack of understanding of what following them means.

I have this fear because I know that it happened to me
Getting distracted by mine craft and other downloadable treats
Funny thing about it is that it’s not exacted to me or us
We’re not the only generation getting distracted by all these attractions lying beneath a glass screen

For once, I have a dream today
More like a point of view
That I believe we’re not the only generation with challenges like Macs and Blue Microphone sets and A7 core processors
We may be the only ones with these specific examples
But generation X, Y and baby boomers alike are all just victims
To this very humane characteristic known as “the idle mind”

What I’m saying is that most of us will always find an excuse
Sometimes in life, it's not enough to just get up in the morning and breathe.
Sure it's amazing and remarkable, but it's also the bare minimum of what one needs to achieve.
That doesn’t take a poem or an open letter or a rapper in a booth
To explain this to the youth
But rather we should just know this one simple truth.

That we are all victim to our own thoughtlessness.
