Reverence Lyrics by Mark Yakich

Unrelated Individuals Forming a Group Waiting to Cross

2004

I said, “I married
my childhood sweetheart, this morning,
along with seven other ex-lovers.”
The priest said, “Congratulations. It was inevitable.”
“Truth is,” I said,
“I loved them all until I left them.
That was inevitable…
Why’d you become a priest?”
“You have two eyes, my son.
Have you seen the rectory’s nuns?”
“Why, yes, kind of…
can’t see much behind their habits,” I said.
“Most secrets go unnoticed,” he said and waited.
“I admire statements I can’t prove,” I said and waited.
He said, “Try this one: tenuous marriages
allow for great victories of the heart.”
“Then you truly have seen what’s behind
the nun’s costume...?” I said.
“There’s a $100 chance of rain today,” he said.
“But don’t spend it all…”
And I saw his smile decline.
“My son, you must become like
a naked nun standing before the mirror. You
must sing in a private choir.”
