back to the sun pt. 1 Lyrics by MC Mantra

the bridge

2020

[Intro: Mantra]
I had my back to the sun when I was lookin’ at you
Ay
I had my back to the sun when I was lookin’ at you
[Verse 1: Mantra]
I felt my body seize up
I’m frozen, I can’t move
I spent so long with darkness
That shade was all I knew
If only I knew
How much I could control my own view
And how much that shit
Was bein’ toxified by the likes of you
[Chorus: Mantra]
I had my back to the sun when I was lookin’ at you
When I was lookin’ at you
All I could see was storm clouds brewin’ in the foreground
I just never knew that they was comin’ from you
They was comin’ from you
That they was comin’ from you
[Post-Chorus: Thando]
I had my back to the sun when I was lookin’ at you
At you
[Verse 2: Mantra]
State the obvious, I ain’t never been an optimist
Always figured happiness did not exist
(Did not exist) I been at video stores
Skip the romantic comedies but I can show you where the horrors is
(Where the horrors is) I became your apologist
Anything to keep from creatin’ this horridness
Ayo, it is what it is
But I wish I hadda had the permission to see the positives
I used to wile out, play the role in the night out
Found myself in a black hole, so deep I couldn’t climb out
You tried to send me to my burial site
My father was dyin’ but I was bein’ buried alive
And after twenty-some years of bein’ generous, I
Couldn’t forgive another minute of them venomous
Still it nearly tore me apart to try to set ‘em aside
I guess that’s a mark of the prison that you kept us inside
How can one try to survive?
No access to sunlight
The [?] let slide by your bloodline
And the one time I ever stepped forward onto the frontline
Had to sacrifice everything to see my shackles untied
You from a sick, sick, broken place
But that ain’t justify being unkind
Still I’m in a different state of mind, my entire world shifted
I think I’m finally startin’ to unwind from lookin’ at you
[Chorus: Mantra, Mantra & Thando]
I had my back to the sun when I was lookin’ at you
When I was lookin’ at you
All I could see was storm clouds brewin’ in the foreground
I just never knew that they was comin’ from you
They was comin’ from you
That they was comin’ from you
[Post-Chorus: Thando]
I had my back to the sun when I was lookin’ at you
At you
Lookin’ at you
I had my back to the sun when I was lookin’ at you
At you
Lookin’ at you
[Outro: Mantra]
I seen a father turn his back on a son
I ain’t gonna turn my back on my son, so long I’ve been
Standin’ with my back to the sun, yo, I’m turnin’ back around
And headin’ back to the sun, headin’ back
