The Ladder, pt. I Lyrics by Principium

Principium

2020

I am envy, I am superior
I am a silent judge of all
For my achievements I feel entitled to one bite more than my neighbor
As sure as the sunshine I know I will rise
Ascending, unbending, my ego implies
My story’s written in the stars
You hear how they sing for me
My story’s written in the stars
Alas, I cannot yet join them
The ladder I must climb is made of knives in the backs of those I’ve betrayed
Ascending high upon their backs
They are only mere rungs to me
Your life is safe, but your eyes are dead inside
You’ll never reach a peg above
For your achievements you feel entitled to one bite more than your neighbor
A lifetime of labor, you play by the rules
You’ve mastered the game, but neglected the flame
As sure as the rain you’ll still struggle to eat
You’ll live on your knees and then die on your feet
In every mirror I walk by, I catch a glimpse of starlit eyes
A perfect creature stares back at me, from somewhere behind that glass sheen
I’m swimming in my reflection, drowning in my perfection
