I read the morning paper without really getting the big picture of it all
My hands don't even seem familiar anymore

Instead a cup up coffee takes me back to that morning in 1929
You’d just walked out the shower when we heard that some brokers just jumped out of buildings in New York City
You made a mess on the floor with all that water from the shower and you started to cry
It can be like that sometimes I suppose

When you left a year later I wasn’t myself anymore for some time
I guess it was around about that time I started to smoke cigarettes
The illness came to us as a big surprise and I couldn’t stand seeing things in a clear light and the smoke really helped to blur out the lines and the contours of the past times
From my window I can see cars come and leave the general store in Pawnee, Oklahoma
It used to be all slow around here but it seem that the pace of time has picked up even in these backlands
