My Youth Lyrics by Rican Havoc

Better Than I Never Been

2020

[Verse]
My Youth, I can still vividly remember the day you passed.
We had spent more than 18 years together, memories include touchdown passes,
Stained glass church windows, and halloween costumes,
But at this point, I never got a trick, only treats.
Never susceptible to defeat, we were a dynamic duo,
Akin to Jordan and Pippen,
Not a soul would catch us slipping,
Regardless of the wet floors and occasional changes in scenery.
You were never demeaning to me,
And hardly anybody was, I was raised in a structure of steel and rebar,
It prevented me from seeing far,
But cultivated a sense of home.
Years passed and I felt our relationship was at an impasse,
The walls around me cracked, but in all reality,
I was too young to understand that our foundation was breaking,
Foreshadowing the inevitable outcomes that correspond with growth and evolution.
But nonetheless, we rekindled our friendship like a dry fire in a wet forest,
One of a kind, a glimmer of light amidst a world of mud,
Unaware of the blessings set for us.
I think about you when I reminisce, hoping for the times when we were kids,
But in these new eyeglasses that I recently purchased,
I can see that our youth was filled with ignorance,
A disdain for different kids,
A bliss that was derivative of a sense of entitlement,
And a blind allegiance to the side I spent most of my time with.
But I must emphasize that I am grateful.
Despite the fact that your passing was unexpected,
And that it released a barrage of pain, uncertainty, and chaos, it has made me a stronger man.
You see, I was too comfortable in my shoes.
I could merely ask for a boost,
And then a gust of air would thrust me to my maximum potential, resources at my demand.
But your passing taught me that I can not be Nike, the goddess of victory,
And that finding a new balance requires a renewal of purpose,
The disposal of routine,
And the strength to overcome whatever obstacles God has in store for me.
13 months after your passing, I still feel a little unlucky,
Because your existence taught me how free life could be,
It taught me that worry could be a distant concept,
And it allowed me to cultivate a sense of self,
Regardless of how isolated it was.
The warmth you provided me will always be welcome,
But I have recently encountered and ventured into the cold, cold world set before me,
and I do not have the option to leave.
A soul like yours could never be properly eulogized,
And I thank you for the comfort you disposed upon me,
but the peace, love, and hope I often felt were relative in retrospect,
and as more conflicts collect,
I view your legacy as a gift, but one that shielded me from the reality of life,
Nonetheless, I hope heaven is treating you right,
My Youth.
