I Do Lyrics by RJ Walker

2016

How ironic to die in a living room.
I remember the gun still wrapped around his finger like a wedding ring;
This was a commitment, you can’t divorce a gravestone.
He used his head as a paintbrush, painted a Van Gogh in the living room, blasted the halo right off his head.
And I wonder if God in heaven has a box full of halos that’ll never be worn.
And I wonder if one of them belongs to him

How ironic, they call it live ammunition.
I don’t remember his name,
I just remember that I could not pronounce it without sounding like a gunshot.
He left a suicide note, it was in Spanish;
I would not have read it anyway,
A suicide note to an EMT is like an apology scratched into the paint of a car.

His son was a skeleton locked in the closet, breathing in his fathers’ ghost, turning his lungs into a haunted house and they don’t train medics in exorcism.
Ambulances are seldom comforting, how ironic they call them sirens;
The song that leaves men to their graves.
On the ambulance, we carry stuffed toys for children in emotional distress like this one.
All I could do was hand him a stuffed rabbit from the drawer under the blankets,
As if a carnival prize could replace his father.
But you feel like a winner, hearing your dad shoot a pointblank bulls eye.

The boys tears fell like feathers, each one was a tiny little angel let out of its rattling birdcage, floating away as if being set free.
And every time the bell tolls, an angel gets its wings.
And every time a gun fires, an angel drops its halo and leaves it where it falls.
Who knows? Maybe the stuffed rabbit would be a better father after all.

But I don’t know anything about this man, I didn’t want to.
He was a movie with a spoiled ending, I don’t want to know the climactic build-up.
I don’t want to know why he married death and wrote a muzzle blast into his wedding vows.
But every bullet hole I’ve ever seen looks like it’s trying the mouth the words “I’m sorry.”
And I’ve never seen a bullet hole smile, except for that one, and it scared me.
After the call, my partner said “Did you see? He had the bluest eyes.
One blew that way and one blew that way.”
And I laughed, and that scared me even more.
