I remember being 7 years old, in our hunter green Volvo 740, riding along the turnpike, placing eyes upon the city that would eventually deceive me. In those days the city wasn't a factory, though still industrialized, it was more like a glass house, a world within its own. I was only in orbit, but as a kid that was enough to light the wick of my imagination. I was in over my head. I always thought the taxis were connected via a silver lining that was being pulled in a clockwise direction for 24 hours. I used to think the trains smelled like the metal they were made of (which they do). My mother works in the city, so I used to think her job was in every tower, and that inside every tower looked something like The Jetsons, with robot assistants and holographic assignments. It was foolish. Everyday at 4 pm I would run to the front yard, position myself 30 degrees to the right of the house across the street, look up ahead and find planes. Coming to and from the city, usually branded in FedEx. I never knew where they landed, but I was determined to find out.
