Hold On Tight Lyrics by Steven S. Billings

Old Luggage

2014

I was left alone in the spring of '03
I didn't know - how could I know, dear Lord
What would become of me?
I set out on my own, and I wish I could say
That I was brave, but I was faltering each step along the way
Then You took me by the hand
And said, "Everything's gonna be alright."
I said, "Jesus, I don't know, but because You say so
I'll hold on tight."
A few years down the road I began to start anew
I didn't know - how could I know, dear God
What You had planned to do?
I put myself online and said, "I need someone kind."
And soon I got a letter from a brand-new friend of mine
And You took me by the hand
And said, "Everything's gonna be alright."
I said, "Jesus, I don't know, but because You say so
I'll hold on tight."
Every week or so a new letter would appear
I didn't know - how could I know?
That she would cancel all my fears
I opened up my heart and she would do the same
But I didn't have a clue that soon I'd want to change her name
But You took me by the hand
And said, "Everything's gonna be alright."
I said, "Jesus, I don't know, but because You say so
I'll hold on tight."
Then one fateful day we decided we should meet
I didn't know - how could I know
That she would sweep me off my feet?
And in the weeks to come we'd spend hours on the phone
And we both realized that we were tired of being alone
And You took me by the hand
And said, "Everything's gonna be alright."
I said, "Jesus, I don't know, but because You say so
I'll hold on tight."
I took her to her mother's resting place
And smiled and gently kissed her lovely face
And thanked her for the way she changed my life
And asked her, "Would you please become my wife?"
And she took me by the hand
And said, "Everything's gonna be alright."
I said, "Baby, yes, I know, and because the Lord says so
We'll hold on tight."
I packed-up all I own and said goodbye to dear friends
I didn't know - how could I know
That life could have such twists and bends?
But as I drive this truck on west-bound Interstate 94
I see her sleeping here beside me and I thank my God and Lord
For He holds us in His hand
And says, "Everything's gonna be alright."
And we say, "Jesus, we know, and we thank You so
That You'll never let us go all through our lives."
Yes, He holds us in His hand
And says, "Everything's gonna be alright."
And we say, "Jesus, we know, and we thank You so
That You'll never let us go all through our lives."
