The Lynching Lyrics by The Restoration (USA)

Constance

2010

Narrator: Omniscient
Palmer came to with his ropes broken loose—
His wife lay beside him drowned
As he jumped up to see his ruin and debris
He knew:
It all comes back ‘round, again
Palmer spit and swore, searched the mud for his sword:
His old colonel’s Confederate blade
His white head reviewed all the men he’d run through
As he gripped its hilt—
O, it all comes back ‘round
The flood carried down the debris to the town
Spilled riches and waste in the soil
The town woke from sleep, formed a mob in the street
They knew:
It all comes back ‘round, again
Thomas ran home, told Constance what he’d done
He said: “Mother, I did it for you.”
Constance said: “Thomas, you were all I had left!”
She gripped him, she knew:
It all comes back . .
Thomas heard someone scream:
“Hey, boy, you didn’t kill me!”
There stood John Palmer out in the yard—
His silk and his sword dripped mud on the porch;
Thomas ran to the door . .
O, it all comes back ‘round
Palmer swung wide, cut Thomas’ side
And her son’s blood set Constance on fire
Her hands came upon the old Vale Union gun
And the blast lit the sky . .
O, it all comes back ‘round, again
The mob’s thirst increased as they came through the trees
And saw Palmer blown near in two
The town left behind begged forgiveness from Christ
While the mob charged the house
O, it all comes back ‘round
“No!” Constance screamed, “no, not him, it was me!”
As they pulled Thomas out to the yard
O, the burn throbbing deep through their hands, loins
And feet;
They circled, they spit—
O, it all comes back . .
They yelled:
“Boy you look white, but your blood’s what ain’t right
And now you’ve killed a righteous man.”
They held Constance down and Thomas gasped out:
“O, Momma, forgive me!”
It all comes back ‘round, again
They groped at his flesh, slid the noose ‘round his neck—
O, they shook and they moaned as they all screamed along:
“This creature we hang, in Jesus Christ’s name.”
They kicked out his legs—
O, it all comes back ‘round, again
The flashlights and feet faded into the trees;
The mob dissolved into the town
Constance cried, “Thomas, they made you, they killed you . .
This wheel never rests.”
O, it all comes back ‘round, again
