Patient in Ward 2 Lyrics by Tonton Raymond

Life on the Line, Vol. 1

2019

[Verse 1]
Been putting in a lot of work
Grinding from 5 to 9
That's am to pm
Would you look at the time?
Haven't been resting enough
I've been forming super tough
The bags in my eyes could hold my clothes at the airport
But it's clear the only luggage that they hold is stress
"Aboy rest
"See as you done dey tensh
"All of this pressure is gonna put you in a mess"
I guess I should have listened to my friends
But was carried away by my goals
Talking to the posts
Target practice I was taking all the shots (shots shots)
So I didn't get the picture that my body had been painting
Till the paint started fading
My immune system was failing
I had caught an infection
Was down with blood poisoning
Rushed to the hospital on one fateful morning
It seemed like my daddy all over again
It was a morning like this that a disease did him in
[Chorus]
Someone's coming through
Put them in ward 2
Needle through the vein he's convulsing again
Heart just stopped, no more tick tock
That's the way it goes, boy just cover him up
Someone's coming through
Put them in ward 2
Needle through the vein he's convulsing again
Heart just stopped, no more tick tock
That's the way it goes, boy just cover him up
[Verse 2]
What if at the hospital I run all out of luck
Slowly start getting better then relapse to septic shock
I don't like hospitals, it's where I lost my pops
And honest to God they couldn't do much for my mom
I go when I need help but doctors are overworked
1 doctor to 6000 thousand patients, ehn, it's a bust
No wonder we pray to God when our health turns
Some of us can't even pay med bills for our health runs
And more doctors travel every year
We are plagued by other fears
You see it everywhere
We think we're a bit cursed
Followed by bad luck
So we end up in a church
Or face bowed in a mosque
Not to worship but to ask God for favours
The system has been rigged to make us suffer loss
Sold to a gospel that be preying on our hurt
So now we don't know who to trust
And I swear to God it's messed up
I watched the patient in my ward die
Reminded me of my daddy
I felt sad for his family
I watched him die in front of me
These thoughts followed me through my recovery
[Chorus]
Coming through
Put them in ward 2
Needle through the vein he's convulsing again
Heart just stopped, no more tick tock
That's the way it goes, boy just cover him up
Someone's coming through
Put them in ward 2
Needle through the vein he's convulsing again
Heart just stopped, no more tick tock
That's the way it goes, boy just cover him up
[Verse 3]
I don't like hospitals much
It's not like I visited one at all the while cancer had battled with my mom
I dislike hospitals a lot
My first admission had death visit the guy with whom I shared a medical ward
But not before my father died in a hospital on a Sunday
Nigerian hospitals aren't a place to go to get saved
And so masses sick finding healing inside a church
While the leaders loot their bellies fat
Where they hiding our money at?
And they are rarely caught
They pray at front rows in the mosques
For every bad medic facility we have another mega church
Less jobs, less schools, less and less equipped hospitals
But bigger fuckin' structures more Pilgrims to Jerusalem
More trips by the government for medical tourism
More money to the preachers for miracle healings
See I don't like hospitals a lot
Not enough cancer facilities, NGOs won't help if you don't look sick enough
I don't like pastors a lot, they play on our predicament
Take advantage of the government incompetence
Black mail their congregants
Into giving offerings
Sew a seed of safety so you won't die when you're traveling
And Of course it's true
Na only God go save you
As you ply bad roads between PH and Enugu
What it do, huh?
Tell me where e dey bite you?
I probably have places in common e dey bite me too
I shared a hospital ward with a man that death came to
We all need white sheets in Naija
We all patients in ward 2
Uh, I shared a hospital ward with a man that death came to
We all need white sheets in Naija
We all patients in ward 2
[Chorus]
Someone's coming through
Put them in ward 2
Needle through the vein he's convulsing again
Heart just stopped, no more tick tock
That's the way it goes, boy just cover him up
Someone's coming through
Put them in ward 2
Needle through the vein he's convulsing again
Heart just stopped, no more tick tock
That's the way it goes, boy just cover him up
