Drivin’ Lyrics by Henry Phillips

On The Shoulders Of Freaks

1997

[Spoken Intro]

I'm gonna do something a little more up-tempo, this is a song that I wrote one time when I was driving. I don't know if you've ever had this happen when you're driving, you, you hit something, like a bump in the road and you look behind you, I had that happen, and I look behind me and there's, like, rabbit fur all over the place, and, um, the woman who had been wearing it was, like, hobbling across the street. That's when I started thinking how funny it is sometimes, we're driving and we're not really paying attention or whatever, that's when I came up with this next song here

[Song]

I ain't going to a friend's house
And I ain't going to my place of work
And I ain't going to a baseball game or a picture show
I'm just drivin' in my car

And I ain't looking at my watch now
'Cos I ain't got no place to go
A man says "Hey, would you like a window shine?"
I said "a-thank you sir, I'm-a doing fine, I'm just drivin' in my car."

Even though it looks like things ain't going my way
I, didn't get promoted
My, wife she done left me
And I, just got evicted
And I, think I'm going bald now
And, now all I got is
A bottle of booze, and this here Thunderbird
And I'll be damned if it's insured

And I ain't looking at the stop signs
And I ain't looking at no traffic lights
And I'm not looking at the children on the crosswalk
I'm just drivin' in my car

And I'm just sipping on my whiskey
And I'm just sucking down some Valium
And I ain't worried about no side effects from the Prozac
I'm just drivin' in my car

"How do ya do hitchiking mama?
Get in the car and take a ride with me."
She says "Get your damn hands off of me."
I say "Don't worry ma'am, I'm a friend you see, and we're just drivin' in my car."

And now the two of us are tearing up the highway
With, no registration
I, ain't got no headlights
So I, can't see a damn thing
And, what the hell was that now?
I, hope it wasn't a human
And now I'm getting heat from this girl that I just picked up off the road
And she's only 15 years old
She's only 15 years old

"How do you do, Mr. Policeman?
How's life treating you on the streets today?"
He says "Pull over son, walk a straight line."
I say "A-thank you sir, I'm-a doing fine, I'm just drivin' in my car."

What's them red lights behind me flashing?
What's that there chopper up above?
The sign says "Checkpoint at the county line."
I say "a-thank you folks, I'm-a doing fine, I'm just drivin' in my car."

I'm just drivin' in my car
I'm just drivin' in my car
She's only 15 years old
And I'm just drivin' in my car
