As dusk falls Isaac spots a light A lantern-lit cabin cuts through the night Through the window, quite a gripping sight Begs him to observe before he indicts With a smile and a tear on his face Sloan removes the contents of his case A little girl standing as still as a stone Her outstretched arm holds a blade of its own Sloan throws it aside and releases his spell He looks relieved, but he doesn't look well Ellie comes to- her dad holds her tight And says "it worked! You'll be alright!" Isaac learns what had drained Sloan's magic supply He'd kept Ellie frozen, and now Isaac sees why When Sloan asked who would help, Bristol became a mute city His money wouldn't go far, but reward fares better than pity He promised the Grand Soul, knowing Ellie needed it more He did the only thing he could to see his child restored And it seems that everything went exactly as he planned The binding blade that laid Silver to waste was in Ellie's hand "You're going to be sick for about seven days But then the worst will pass, and you'll be okay" She says she'll be fine as long as he's there too "I wish that I could stay, but it's something I can't do" She asks if she can come "I'm sorry Ellie, but no I have to go somewhere no child should ever go" "Will you see Mom there?" this idea wasn't new "I really hope not- I'd rather her find you" Sloan says he's sleepy now- he needs to lie down Ellie lies with him- says she wants to hear "the sound" She lies her head on her father's chest She says that when she's sad his heart helps her to rest "Your uncle" Says Sloan "will take care of you He may be poor, but he'll do all he can do" Ellie asks her dad when he will come back "I don't think there's anyone who can answer that" Sloan tells her he loves her, as he strokes her hair "I always will, even when I can't be there" Ellie returns the phrase- her little voice quivers Sloan smiles through his pain and his shivers A few minutes pass with the weight of days Isaac hates what he sees, but he can’t break his gaze Ellie lifts her head and looks back down, distressed "The sound" has faded from her father's chest Sloan was damned and bound To leave the earth a shattered man But he departs with a smile Knowing he's done all that he can Isaac hears footsteps in the distance A man resembling Sloan draws near Isaac leaves gifts at the door All of Sloan's money and some extra gear The saga over, Isaac's trek home begins He doesn't entertain a single thought of might-have-been Of course he ponders the web that fate has spun But he never forgets that what’s done is done Those that he wears proudly for all to see Are tokens that represent victories But those unseen or sung most surely are The very deepest of his scars
