Listen up, young’ens!
“Sit up straight”
“Clean that plate”
“When I say right now that don’t mean ‘wait’”
“Do as I say, not as I do”
“Get that look off your face when I’m talking to you”
“When I was your age, all it took 
Was for Mama or Daddy to give me that look”
“Tomorrow is Sunday—get your church clothes out
Get everything you’re going to wear 
And after you get yourself ready, comb your sister’s hair
Make sure your brother brushes his teeth and help him tie his shoes
Now, you’re my oldest child
I’m depending on you”
“Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about!”
“I brought you in this world, I’LL TAKE YOU OUT!”
I could go on and on about the things they’d say
But what about the things they’d do?
Like when Mama would see a little dirt on your face,
She’d spit, then wipe it on you!
Or, when Daddy would wake you up EARLY so you could cut the grass
And as soon as you were finished, he’d add another task!
But, what about the wisdom and the great advice they gave
They taught us to be strong
They taught us to be brave
They taught us to be leaders and to stand for what we believe
And to never underestimate the things we could achieve
And even when they’d struggle and could barely pay the bills
They kept a roof over our heads and kept our stomachs filled
And when times were tough, faith in God was always enough
Mama would sing those old church songs
All. Day. Long.
The things they’d say
The things they’d do
Even the way they’d call your name
So listen up, young’ens
Because some things should never change
